First Communion flowers

The First Holy Communion is a Catholic tradition held in May or June every year in Malta and Gozo. It’s a highly anticipated occasion for children attending doctrine lessons leading up to the day they receive the Eucharist for the first time. Flowers have become an integral part of the celebration and on the day, we see flowers in children’s hands, on their heads and even decorating cakes, table centrepieces at parties held after the sacrament and front doors of homes all over the islands. The church is also beautifully decorated with white floral arrangements to create a reverent atmosphere and commemorate this milestone in children’s lives. Flowers are often arranged on the alter table, surrounding the altar and at the entrance.

White is the most used colour for Holy Communion flowers; symbolizing sacredness, innocence, and purity to match the children’s attire which is also typically all white. Our bouquets are typically a mixture of fresh white roses, freesias, gypsophilia, lisianthus. We sometimes have requests for light-coloured flowers but make sure that your parish accepts that first. Usually, girls are adorned with a floral head crown or head wreath – a circle of natural fresh flowers and leaves on their heads – most likely attached to a veil. It is customary for children to carry communion candles and/or flowers during the procession – the candles are then lit during the ceremony. The flowers carried by or gifted to children are simple, and arrangements vary in size depending on what you’re after. We also beautify taper candles with fresh florals.

Given the celebration takes place beginning of summer, the best way to take care of the flowers is to place them in an airconditioned room without direct sunlight or draught. If you’d like to have a longer-lasting bouquet of artificial flowers, we can cater for that as well. If your child suffers from any allergies, artificial flowers may be the safest option.
